Journey

Born in 1926 in Masaka, Uganda, Christopher Ssebaduka emerged as a pioneering force in the Kadongo Kamu music genre, earning the endearing title 'Jjajja w’abayimbi' or 'grandfather of Kadongo Kamu singers.' Rooted in Uganda's oral traditions, Ssebaduka began his musical journey in the bustling markets of Kampala during the 1940s. His landmark recording, 'Omukazi Malaya' in 1955, marked the dawn of commercially recorded folk music in Uganda. The song's success was a testament to his ability to blend sharp satire with poignant societal critique. Alongside tracks like 'Eddame lya Chwa' and 'Oluwala Olunyunyusi,' he entertained and provoked thought, cementing his role as a cultural commentator. During the politically tumultuous 1970s and 1980s, Ssebaduka remained an outspoken voice. Tracks like 'Kyaali Kyetagisa' criticized governmental regimes, necessitating periods of strategic retreat. He founded the Kadongo Kamu Cultural Society, fostering a thriving community and mentoring future generations of artists. Despite passing away in 1998, reportedly from tuberculosis, Ssebaduka's legacy continues through his profound influence on Uganda’s music and culture.
